2 July 2014 — “A Soldier Runs Toward the Sound of Cannon Fire”

Huge shoulders!!!
Huge shoulders!!!

This is a hallmark of great training on the battlefield. Soldiers know only one direction, “forward” toward the enemy. Toward the sound of the fray. This training that soldiers receive, often serves them very well in other situations in later life. Basically, soldiers learn to engage and to not give up.

So it is with us as we get older. All the lessons we have learned in our earthly existence now must come out and drive us forward in our next quest.

Today, I had these thoughts of a soldier and which way I need to go to engage the obstacles that threaten my dream. I have learned in my bodybuilding training on a daily basis, to go directly at the things that need to be moved, improved on, changed, raised, corrected, etc. There is no other direction to go but toward the obstacles to my dream of winning a national title. To engage them as enemies of the first order.

Today, I took a very large step forward by starting a training regimen with a new coach. It’s what I needed to do. The process and journey to win are now underway. I will win!

My bodyfat % was 7.5%. My weight 181 lbs. My lean body weight is 167 lbs.
I will keep my % Body Fat between 7.5% and 10%, per my coach during the off season as I inch my way to 198 lbs stage weight for the nationals in July 2015.

The coach promises brutal workouts with sufficient rest between maximal stressing of muscle groups to grow.

I have lots to learn and lots to do but each little thing will cause me to improve. To prepare me to hear the sound of canon fire, to run toward that canon fire, to engage the enemy, and to win.

So it is with all of us no matter what our personal goals and objectives are. To not shrink from the fray, but to turn and face it, move toward it, and do battle with it until it is gone.

Growing old is non negotiable. Running toward the sound of the canon fire that threatens to crush us must also become non negotiable.

    1. Hi Marilyn, Thank you so much for your feedback and for believing in an old fogie like me. As I said before, I got onto this road quite by accident. But, when I made the commitment I decided to “not hold back” and see where the chips fall. I write the things in my blog each day using themes and experiences that best illustrate the struggle that all of us face. As we have gotten older, meeting these challenges has become increasingly difficult to even think about, say nothing about pursuing and actually attaining them. So, if my journey can be watched by many with the net result that a few take on their own passions with new life and vigor then we all win. It is always better to take on life in a proactive way, taking no prisoners, and casting caution to the wind. See you in a couple of weeks and I am greatly anticipating long goofy conversations that will bind us together more firmly forever. I am looking forward to seeing you with Grant (seeing as how it took you a whole damned lifetime to find him). I will be thrilled to introduce you and the remainder of the class of 1969 to my precious friend, lover, and wife —- Christine.
