Sometimes when I listen to this new generation of people growing up around us, I get the distinct impression that they have no real idea of what work and accomplishment looks like. Everything is a smug truth whether it’s true or not. The basic fact of all things in life is that having anything to love, to hold, to value, to use, to keep safe involves tons of effort and sacrifice. Like I tell my wife all the time, “If it’s worth loving then it is worth working for and fighting for to get it and to keep it safe.” If it costs me nothing to have then I probably do not value the person or the item very much.
In bodybuilding we all go to the gym and we see the “fair weather” lifters and “ego driven personalities in the midst of their admiring groupies.” Each loves to be seen but usually none of them likes the out of sight and behind the scenes training sessions that are required to excel.
All wishful thinking in the gym results in nothing more than self-deception and NO RESULTS. All of us must stop day dreaming and become visionaries with a plan and a purpose. Hard work doing extra sets, adding more weight at key times, training with intent, disappearing inside our heads to the music, knowing we can do better and then doing it. As they say, “the results will come out in the wash.”
Nobody sees any of this. We are alone with ourselves and our visions and our purpose. We never forget what we are doing and why.
In closing let me just say this. “IF IT’S WORTH HAVING, IT’S WORTH WORKING FOR—INVISIBLY, ALONE, AND QUIETLY.” The best to all of “us” who have learned this lesson. See you at the top!
