Some simple advice for all of us who seek to advance, improve, or to win…..Be quiet! Look inside yourself for the vision, strength, commitment, and inspiration to push forward to our understood or stated goals. There is no substitute for prayer and meditation in an effort to get in touch with the thing needed to attack the difficulties that lie between us and our objectives. When alone, stay there until G9d gives you the answer or vision to follow.
I worked for the Air Force Surgeon General for a few years and he had a favorite saying he’d use when fighting back or winning was on the line. He’d say, “TIME TO FIX BAYONETS AND COME OUT OF THE FOX HOLES AND ATTACK!” This is precisely how we should see ourselves. We have to see our journey with a sense of urgency. We ARE the underdogs and we cannot lose. We have to perform no matter the cost.
As we solidify our resolve, many outside our lives (per Coach Jeff Later: will see only a person that is obsessed, self-absorbed, vain, restricted. When in reality what these same people don’t see is somebody who is disciplined, healthy, self-confident, and free). We are “CHANGING” and this change does not require the praise of people or the loud music of John Phillip Sousa to motivate us. We who aspire to be good or great must labor in silence because nobody will do it for us. In bodybuilding we must change. It starts in the heart and mind. Then it spreads to our character and our ethical selves. In other words, nothing that is truly lasting happens just because somebody compliments us. We have to do the hard personal, inner work in order to accomplish what we set out to do. It all happens when nobody is looking. When there is just us and a dream.
In closing: CHANGE is coming just like we have imagined. Now, get up and close the door so you will not be interrupted. “FIX BAYONETS (QUIETLY) AND ATTACK.” Nobody’s watching as “CHANGE” happens.
